A short hop down the M1
Barnsley is about twenty minutes from me, and I know it well. When I’m not photographing a wedding on a Saturday, there’s a fair chance I’m at Oakwell. The town has a lot going for it on a wedding day: the white Portland stone of the town hall, and some of the best country estates in South Yorkshire within a short drive.
Country house weddings
Barnsley couples often head out to the parks and estates around the town. Wentworth Castle Gardens and Cannon Hall both offer formal gardens, long lawns and big trees: everything you want for relaxed portraits. Town hall or country estate?
Barnsley gives you both. A civic ceremony in the town centre, with its Portland stone and grand steps, makes a striking start to the day. Then many couples head out into the countryside for the reception, where there’s space for lawn games, long golden-hour portraits and a proper party.
If you’re splitting the day between two places, I’ll build the drive into your timeline and make sure your guests aren’t left waiting while we take photos. Short, organised group shots at the ceremony, then a relaxed portrait session once everyone’s settled at the reception, works well.
