Getting Ready

Some venues just feel right the moment you walk through the door, and The Holmfield Arms is one of them. Jaysie and Michael chose it for their wedding, and it suited them perfectly — The Holmfield only ever hosts one wedding a day, so from morning until night the entire place belonged to them and the people they loved most.

The morning began the way so many of the best ones do — a room full of nervous energy, laughter, and the last few finishing touches, Jaysie surrounded by bridesmaids and family as the excitement built. There’s a particular kind of light in the older rooms at the Holmfield, and it made for some beautiful, unhurried getting-ready photographs before anyone had even thought about the ceremony ahead.

A Venue Steeped in History

Set on Lowe Hill, just a mile south of Wakefield city centre, the building sits on ground with history stretching back long before the first wedding was ever held there — the site is believed to stand close to where Wakefield Castle once stood, before it was lost to a great storm in the 14th century. That layer of history gives the place a quiet weight you can feel the moment you step onto the grounds.
Today it’s a handsome stone lodge wrapped in open parkland — mature trees, sweeping lawns and long views that do half the work for a wedding photographer before the day has even started.

Family and Friends on the Lawn

Outside, the parkland became the backdrop for the moments that matter — family gathered in loose, easy groups, friends catching up after months apart, children running across the lawn while the adults tried, and mostly failed, to keep them still for photos. That’s the part of a wedding day that can’t be staged: the genuine warmth of a garden full of people who are simply glad to be there for two people they love.

Golden Hour at The Holmfield

As the light softened into evening, the grounds took on a different character altogether — golden across the grass, long shadows from the trees, the kind of glow that photographers wait all day for. It was the perfect close to a day that had history under its feet, family all around, and two people at the very centre of it.

Because the Holmfield only takes one wedding a day, you’re never sharing the grounds with another party, and that makes a real difference to portraits. The lawns and mature trees give you privacy and natural shade.

Best photo spots: the front of the lodge for full-length shots of the two of you, the tree line for soft, even light at midday, and the open lawn as the sun drops for golden hour.

My tip: leave twenty minutes free in the evening for a quick walk outside. The light across the parkland around sunset is the best of the day.
