Choosing Your Wedding Cake in Wakefield
Styles, flavours, timings and a few tips to make the cake cutting one of the best moments in your photos.

The cake is part centrepiece, part pudding and part photo opportunity. Wakefield has some excellent home and studio bakers, so here’s how to choose well.
When to book
Popular bakers fill up for summer weekends, so start looking six to nine months before the wedding. Most will offer a tasting before you commit.
Styles to think about
- Classic tiers in buttercream or fondant: timeless and elegant.
- Naked or semi-naked cakes with fresh fruit and flowers: relaxed and rustic.
- Cheese towers: perfect for couples who’d rather have stilton than sponge.
- Dessert tables: cupcakes, brownies and doughnuts for guests to graze on.

Tasting tips
- Try a few flavours and consider a different one for each tier.
- Ask how the cake will cope in a warm room in summer.
- Check whether delivery and set-up are included.
Getting a great cake-cutting photo
Place the cake somewhere with good light and a clean background, not tucked in a dark corner by the fire exit. Do the cutting before the first dance, while everyone’s gathered. Hold the knife together, look at each other, then look up at the guests: that’s three great pictures in ten seconds.
I’ll photograph the cake and room details before everyone sits down, while it’s all still perfect.
